Understanding Physiotherapy and Its Uses

Here at Holistic Medical Clinic, we pride ourselves on focusing on injury prevention and wellness care wherever possible. Certainly, many of our patients come in because of an injury, for trauma rehabilitation or MVA. But when they get better, continued self-care and supportive treatment need to replace active recovery regimens. This is where our physiotherapy team really shines!

Physiotherapy is a frequently misunderstood practice that in reality is very versatile. It can sometimes be confused with chiropractic or even RMT. Physiotherapy can certainly fill in the blanks for massage therapy and chiropractic, but these practices are very different. Our patients see excellent results combining the three, but even choosing one is a great step towards full-body wellness!

So what exactly is physiotherapy?

It’s in the name! Physiotherapy has two integral parts: “physical” and “therapy”. The “physical” part deals with fitness and mobility of the whole body. The “therapy” part addresses existing problems to fix them—both passively and actively. Mobilization techniques, strengthening exercises, specialized machines, postural correction all form part of physiotherapy.

On the other hand, chiropractic care focuses on the spine and particular joins in the body, but not the muscles or biomechanical shortcomings. Massage therapy works to loosen the muscles and provides proper drainage of the fluids in the bones, muscles, and soft tissue. Physiotherapy may incorporate elements from both with small localized massage, joint assessment, MFR techniques, and drainage.

It is safe to say that general physiotherapy is necessary for everyone regardless of the fitness level and health. Whether you are very fit, want to get fitter or you have some problems anywhere in the body, physiotherapy can and will help. A single consultation with an expert physiotherapist may be enough to put you on the right track or you may need several visits. Either way, a better way to move will be the reward.
